Well my car in in the shop today.

It has needed rear breaks for a really long time and so I bit the bullet. After my window fiasco the dealer gave me a laundry list of things my car "needed". I supplied that list to my shop and asked them to evaluate what I "needed".....well the good news is the dealer has a very different definition of "need" than my shop does.

I am still going to be out a chunk of change*, but my car will be safe to drive again.

*Not the $2500+ the dealer would have charged me for the "needed" work.

I dumped a bunch of $ into my car yesterday while it was having its oil changed. I couldn't cope with taking it to my mechanic to have him confirm what the guy at this shop said needed doing, b/c I can't get to work without a car and the logistics of getting a car for a day are a *huge* pita. But now they say my front brakes have about 5k miles left on them, and for *that* I will go back to my mechanic and get it confirmed and have the work done there.

Cars are such a pain in the butt. How did we live without them?

With gas they way it is I wish it was a little easier for me to take the T to work. I can do it but it takes a long time.

Not that it helps you get to work but the guy I am at is Arco Tire & Services in Teele Sq. They have always been great with my car and have been thus far really good on price too. They tell you what you "need" to do and what you can wait on too, which is really nice.

My mechanic is in Inman, and I like him, but there is no way to get from Inman to work without a car, and if I leave my car with him... Yeah. So for now, I use a garage around the corner from my office, the honesty of which I have not yet ascertained. What the hell do I know about cars, to know if they're telling me the truth or not? Tricky, huh.

You should look to see if they are listed on the Car Talk website.

Remember that big chunk of money I spend on my car 8 months ago. 800 bucks to fix the coolant leak?

Its leaking again.

I bought more coolant, probably enough to last me as long as the car will.

I hate dealerships.

Sounds like you need to have them look at it again if it is the same issue? If it is less than a year I am sure the part is still under warranty.

The problem is that they most likely replaced a part that wasn't actually causing the problem. When I found out the price I should have just told them not to touch it and bought some coolant. Its not that expensive and the car has 100K miles on it.

Im certainly not going back to that particular dealership since they were basically terrible. I could bring it elsewhere I guess but I really don't want to spend any money on the problem. I don't think they will fix the problem for free just because someone else replaced the wrong part, but maybe im mistaken.

Its always been a slow leak so it takes 6 months to find out if they have fixed it or not. Its not like the time the water pump sprung a leak.
